Moke Lake

Mirror lake reflections, towering mountains and golden central Otago landscapes. Just 24 minutes from the town centre, Moke Lake provides a breathtaking backdrop for gorgeous photos of your family.

The traditional names for Moke Lake are Punāmāhaka and Waikamāhaka. In Te Reo Māori they are said to mean “Twin Waters”.

The drive to Moke Lake is a spectacle in and of itself. You’ll enjoy mountain and lake views for the first 10 minutes as you drive towards Glenorchy before turning onto Moke Lake Road. Once you reach the top of the hill, the road changes to gravel as you enter farm land. Flocks of sheep dot the hills, bookended by the mountains on either side. Soon the lake will appear, presenting a mirror of its surroundings. It is truly breathtaking!

Things to know before you go:

  • For transport, the journey will be more comfortable in a 4WD vehicle, however, a 2WD vehicle is generally okay.

  • For footwear, I recommend wearing comfortable black or brown boots. This allows you to explore the magical scenery!
(Plus they look great in photos!)

  • This spot is great in every season! Due to day light savings, the best time for a photoshoot will differ throughout the year.

  • Between April and September, we would aim to start the photoshoot at 2pm. From October to March, we will start at about 6:30pm These timings will change slightly as the seasons progress, but you can use this as a rough guide.

  • In the colder Winter months, make sure you bring some warmer layers! As you can well imagine, it can get very cold here in Queenstown.

Moke Lake is a fantastic location! The drive there is almost as spectacular as the location itself! Every season brings it’s own unique beauty to the landscape surrounding Moke Lake, making it an awesome spot, no matter the time of year. It is very convenient with plenty of spots to explore and lots of parking. If you’d like to book a Photoshoot at Moke Lake, Click Here.
