Jack’s Point Beach

Located in Jack’s Point, Jack’s Point Beach is a truly idyllic place to be. Here you’ll be treated to the Remarkables mountain range (Kawarau) as a backdrop and the shores of stoic Lake Whakatipu. It is a majestic spot for family photos in Winter or Summer that you will treasure for years to come.

When shall we go?

In the months of April - September the sun will set around 4:30pm, so I recommend meeting at the location at 3pm to make the most of the beautiful golden hour before sunset. Between October and March, the sun will set much later in the day. The exact time varies from 7:30pm to as late as 9:30pm. During this time of year it is best to meet 2 hours before the official sunset time. However this will be communicated and confirmed with you upon booking.

What do we need to know?

  • For this location, I recommend wearing neutral, nude or earthy tones.

  • This area is best accessed by a 4WD vehicle, as the road approaching the beach is very uneven.

  • Wear comfortable shoes as we will be walking on the pebbly beach and sometimes in the grass.

  • In the colder Winter months, make sure you bring some warmer layers! As you can well imagine, it can get very cold in Queenstown.

The history of Jack’s Point

Now for a little history about the area; Jack’s Point is named after a man called Jack Tewa who was a local Māori stationhand. In the year of 1862, Jack bravely rescued a European man named Mitchell during a storm on Lake Whakatipu. Their boat capsized during a squall, however Jack was courageously able to right the boat and pull Mitchell aboard. Jack was awarded a medal from the Royal Humane Society for his act of bravery.
